After warning a week ago, Safaikaramcharis and other casual/daily basis labourers from seven municipalities including Banihal, Ramban, Batote, Doda, Bhaderwah, Thathri and Kishtwar of Jammu province went on indefinite “Kaam Choro Strike” on Tuesday.
As The Chenab Times reported on the 21st of this month, after PDD employees, Safaikaramcharis gave a seven-day ultimatum to the government to fulfil their demands, and now they started their indefinite Kaam Choro strike here today. They are demanding regularisation, the implementation of the Minimum Wage Act (salary as per UT rate) and a pension after retirement.
Speaking to The Chenab Times, Vice President of Chenab Valley Safaikaramcharis Union, Shokat Hussain, said, “Our job is a kind of job that can’t be done by other labourers.” In the time of the coronavirus, we have maintained sanitation in every municipality, but what is done by the government for us is false promises only. “
He further said, “We have given seven days’ time to the government but no official approached us, and today, after the completion of the ultimatum, we started our strike and this will end after our demands are heard.”
