Sidhu Moosewala shot dead in Mansa District — What does it say about the current government of Punjab?

The actor and Congress leader, Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu (popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala), was shot dead on May 29th, in Jawaharke Village of Mansa District, by a group of gangsters. Sidhu Moosewala was travelling with two other people who were injured after the attack and were rushed to the civil hospital. Moosewala was declared dead by the doctors, while the other two are known to have escaped injuries and are still in the hospital.

The attack happened after his security was withdrawn by CM Bhagwant Mann as a “temporary move” under the emergent “Law and Order Duty”. He was amongst the 424 people whose security was withdrawn by the Punjab Police. The ‘Lawrence Bishnoi Gang’ and a close aide of the gang leader, ‘Goldy Brar’, claim responsibility for the actor’s murder through a Facebook post and reside in Canada. Thirty shots were taken from three AK-94 rifles by the gangsters at Mousewala’s jeep.

The question that arises here is, “Are such murders and terror activities really normal?” and if not, then “what is the solution?

Recently, a lot of terror activities have increased in the state of Punjab, like the arrest of terror operatives, recovering explosives near the Attari-Wagah Border, the Ludhiana Bomb Blast Case, and the recent communal clash in Patiala, etc. All these incidents raise nothing but concerns for ordinary people, who wonder about their safety. The Punjab shares a border with Pakistan, making it more vulnerable to terrorism, and the recent terror activities just add to it. The activities of terror also say a lot about the current working government and directly question its functioning. Though the newly-elected Chief Minister, Mr. Bhagwant Mann of the Aam Aadmi Party, has said, “The‘strictest’ punishment will be given to those who will try to spoil the atmosphere of the state.” He has also warned Punjabi singers to reduce the promotion of gun culture and violence in their songs, but it does not seem to have any effect.

The law and order do not seem to have any control over these terror activities, as the supply of explosives, killings with AK-47, 94, etc., seem to blindside the police and other authorities. It also questions the efficiency of the government and its capability in enforcing law and order in the state. Such events are a threat to society’s environment and can lead to communal violence. As a result of all of this, the government should make sure that every person’s identity and belongings are properly checked at check posts, while traveling, in villages, or near border areas, in order to avoid any kind of violence or terror act. The government should keep a check on every nook and corner through CCTVs, or intelligence reports, etc. Somehow, despite having such a large police force, state intelligence, etc., terror activities still seem to go on, which means the state security system is still lacking something, which is yet to be figured out on the government’s part.

Such acts of terror need to be stopped unless they can lead to something which we all may not have imagined.
