Himachal Pradesh Kept the “Alternate Government Tradition”, Brings Congress Back To Power

With 40 seats in the 68-member Legislative Assembly, the Congress is back in power in Himachal Pradesh. Only 25 seats were won by the BJP, and some of its ministers lost in their home districts, however chief minister Jai Ram Thakur won from Seraj for a record-breaking sixth time.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, congratulated the citizens of Himachal Pradesh and party members for the elusive electoral victory. “I thank the people and voters of Himachal Pradesh for the victory. I also thank all the leaders and in-charge secretaries who worked hard for the success of the party,” Mr. Kharge told reporters.

He claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s campaigning in Himachal Pradesh both helped the party win.

The Congress and the BJP have alternately formed the government in Himachal Pradesh’s bipolar election system for more than three decades. The voters in the hill State have once again upheld the tradition of ousting the incumbent government after five years in office.

Three Independents also emerged victorious. Aam Aadmi Party, which had contested on 67 seats, failed to open its account.

The Governor accepted Mr. Thakur’s resignation after receiving it, and on the council of ministers’ recommendation, dissolved the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
