Turkey was hit by three powerful earthquakes on Monday with magnitudes of 7.8, 7.6, and 6.0. More than 2,300 people were killed and thousands were injured. In Turkey and neighbouring Syria, there are deaths and destruction. The most recent two earthquakes occurred hours after the first deadly 7.8-magnitude quake.
The US Geological Survey said quake was centred about 33 kilometres (20 miles) from Gaziantep about 26 kilometres (16 miles) from the town of Nurdagi. It was centred 18 kilometres (11 miles) deep, according to the US Geological Survey.
As rescue crews combed through mountains of debris in towns and cities all around the region, it was still thought that hundreds of people were still buried beneath the rubble.
On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold, rainy and snowy winter night, as buildings were flattened and strong aftershocks continued.
Rescue workers and residents in multiple cities searched for survivors, working through tangles of metal and giant piles of concrete.
India and other countries are rushing aid. PM Narendra Modi reached out to quake hit-Turkey. “India stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey and is ready to offer all possible assistance to cope with this tragedy,” the PM said. The government has decided to send rescue teams, medical teams and relief material.
The epicentre of the first quake was near Nurdagi in Gaziantep province, the Syria border. The second quake was near near Ekinozu in nearby Kahramanmaraş province; and the third near Goksun in the same province.
