Former President Jair Bolsonaro announced his intentions to return to Brazil in the coming weeks during an event at an evangelical church in Florida. This was the first public statement made by Bolsonaro regarding his return, as he has been residing in the US since December 31st, the day before the inauguration of current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The event was organized by the right-wing organization Yes Brazil USA and was held in Portuguese for a crowd of Bolsonaro supporters living abroad. Bolsonaro’s return has been the subject of speculation, as he is under investigation for possible wrongdoing in four inquiries. His initial one-month diplomatic visa ended on January 31st, and his lawyers have applied for a tourist visa to extend his stay. Bolsonaro’s son, Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro, stated that he is unaware of when his father will return, and that he is “relaxing.” Bolsonaro no longer holds the special legal protection that required any trials to be held at the Supreme Court. The investigations include his potential role in inciting the January 8th riot by his supporters and who organized and financed the mass gathering in Brasilia.
