Super Bowl magic: Mahomes, Chiefs beat Eagles 38-35

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes led his team to victory in the Super Bowl, despite playing with an injured ankle. In the fourth quarter, Mahomes threw two touchdown passes, scrambled 26 yards on the go-ahead drive, and helped lead the Chiefs to a 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. This win marks the Chiefs’ second NFL title in four years and earned Mahomes his second Super Bowl MVP award.

Mahomes’ performance was all the more impressive considering the adversity he faced, with a reaggravated right ankle injury. The first Super Bowl match-up featuring two Black starting quarterbacks saw both Mahomes and Jalen Hurts excel, but it was Mahomes who rose to the occasion in the second half to secure the win. Coach Andy Reid, who had previously been unable to win the big game in Philadelphia, finally earned his second ring with the Chiefs and Mahomes.

The score was tied 35-35 when the Eagles tried to let the Chiefs score a touchdown with under two minutes left. However, a defensive holding call on the Eagles’ James Bradberry resulted in a first down for the Chiefs. After taking a knee twice, Harrison Butker kicked a 27-yard field goal with just 8 seconds left, sending thousands of red-clad Chiefs fans into a frenzy.

Mahomes’ injury may have been bad, but it was not enough to keep him off the field. The 27-year-old quarterback became the third player to win his second NFL MVP award before the age of 28 and the youngest QB to start three Super Bowls. He broke the MVP curse by becoming the first player to win the Super Bowl in the same season as winning the MVP award, after nine straight players lost.

Despite being outnumbered in the stadium, the Chiefs fans were able to silence the boisterous Philly fans with their tomahawk chop chant. Mahomes and the Chiefs put on a show, following Rihanna’s electrifying halftime performance with a sensational offensive outburst. Despite suffering a high ankle sprain in the divisional round, Mahomes limped off the field but showed no ill effects on the next possession.

Mahomes scrambled 14 yards to the Eagles 4, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Isiah Pacheco, and then tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kadarius Toney to give the Chiefs their first lead of the game. After the Chiefs defense tightened up, Toney returned a line-drive kick 65 yards to the Eagles 5, setting up a touchdown by Skyy Moore.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts wouldn’t give up, hitting DeVonta Smith for a 45-yard gain and running in for his third score of the game. Hurts also ran in for the 2-point conversion, tying the score 35-35 with 5:15 left in the game. But Mahomes and the Chiefs didn’t back down, securing the win and bringing home the Super Bowl title.
