Himachal Pradesh’s Sports Minister, Vikramaditya Singh, announced that construction of several stadiums is underway in the district, costing a total of Rs 75 crore, to uplift sports and players in the region. Singh shared that a multipurpose stadium worth Rs 54 crore is being built near Shimla in Katasani. Additionally, an athletics track is being established at Saraswatinagar with a budget of Rs 12 crore, and a sports hostel and an indoor multipurpose stadium is being constructed at Duttnagar in Rampur.
The Sports Department has received Rs 63 lakh to reward the medallists and participants of the Commonwealth Games held last year. Three athletes from Himachal Pradesh – Vikas Thakur, Renuka Thakur, and Ashish Chaudhary – are eligible for the cash award. Vikas and Renuka will receive Rs 30 lakh each as per the state’s sports policy, while Ashish will be awarded Rs 3 lakh for his participation in boxing. Secretary Sports, Rajeev Sharma, confirmed that a separate head has been created to provide cash awards.
The government’s investment in sports infrastructure and cash awards for athletes is a welcome move, which is expected to motivate more young people in the region to pursue sports as a career. These new stadiums and the provision of cash awards for athletes are expected to give a much-needed boost to the sports industry in Himachal Pradesh.
