Kishtwar has been in the discussion on social media recently for a shocking incident that has outraged the local community. A video clip of a chicken shop located in the Bus Stand area of Kishtwar went viral on social media, showing a butcher slaughtering chickens in an inhumane and cruel manner. The video also revealed that the erring butcher had violated religious norms, which hurt the sentiments of a particular community.
The local police department took immediate action on receiving the complaint, and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishtwar, Sh. Khalil Poswal-JKPS, directed the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Kishtwar police station, Insp Abid Bukhari, to conduct a raid on the chicken shop. The Food and Safety Inspector of Kishtwar and an Executive Magistrate also accompanied the police team.
During the raid, the shop was sealed by Municipal Committee Kishtwar, and the license of its owner was cancelled. Moreover, preventive proceedings were initiated under relevant sections of the law against the erring butcher. SSP Kishtwar Mr. Poswal-JKPS warned all chicken butchers in the region to refrain from such behaviour and cautioned that anyone found violating the norms would face strict legal action.
The swift action taken by the Kishtwar police department has sent a strong message to the local community that the police are committed to upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the interests of the public. The incident has also highlighted the need for greater awareness and education on animal welfare and ethical practices in animal husbandry.
At the same time, the incident raises several questions about the regulation of the poultry industry in the region. It is essential to ensure that all chicken butchers comply with the relevant laws and regulations, including those related to animal welfare and food safety. The incident also underscores the need for greater scrutiny of the supply chain and the enforcement of stringent quality controls to prevent the sale of contaminated or adulterated meat.
In conclusion, the incident at the chicken shop in Kishtwar is a wake-up call for all stakeholders in the poultry industry. The police action has demonstrated that the law will not tolerate any violation of norms or practices that hurt the interests of the public. However, it is equally important to initiate a broader discussion on animal welfare, ethical practices in animal husbandry, and the regulation of the poultry industry to ensure the well-being of both animals and humans.
