“Himalayan Bird Count” to take place in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is set to host the annual Himalayan Bird Count on May 13, 2023, an event aimed at tracking bird populations across the Himalayan regions. The initiative, started by Bird Count India, Bird Conservation Nepal, and the Royal Society for Protection of Birds, Bhutan, will see participants conduct bird surveys in various locations across Jammu and Kashmir, recording data on the species, number, and location of birds they observe.

The data collected during the event will be used to track changes in bird populations over time and identify areas that require conservation efforts. The event is open to bird enthusiasts, conservationists, and nature lovers of all ages and backgrounds.

“We are excited to bring the Himalayan Bird Count to Jammu and Kashmir and showcase the incredible birdlife of the region,” said Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Assistant Professor and In-charge, Institute of Mountain Environment, University of Jammu. “Through this event, we hope to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the habitats of these beautiful creatures and encourage more people to get involved in bird conservation.”

Participants will have the opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of the Himalayas and learn about the different bird species that call the region home. This year, the event is being organized in collaboration with Institute of Mountain Environment, Govt. MAM College Jammu and GDC Banihal, and bird surveys will be conducted in Sudhmahadev Conservation Reserve.

“The Himalayan Bird Count is an important initiative in promoting monitoring of birds in India and raising awareness about the importance of bird conservation among the general public,” said one of the coordinators of the event in Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Muzaffar A Kichloo.
