In a tragic incident that unfolded during the night of September 13th to 14th in Patrara, Rajouri district, a Sarpanch and Village Defense Committee (VDC) member stands accused of fatally shooting his wife with a .303 rifle, according to local authorities.
The alleged perpetrator, identified as Yashpal, son of Tirth Ram, hails from the village of Patrara and serves as the Sarpanch of Panchayat Halka Patrara. The victim in this tragic incident has been identified as Neelam Devi, aged 46.
Authorities were alerted to the incident when information reached the Sunderbani police station. It was reported that Yashpal had discharged his VDC .303 Rifle, causing serious injuries to his wife, Neelam Devi, according to a report by news agency GNS. Prompt action was taken, with Neelam Devi receiving immediate medical attention at the Sub District Hospital Sunderbani before being referred to GMC Jammu for further treatment.
In response to this distressing incident, a case (FIR No 63/2023) has been registered under sections 307/323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 30 of the Indian Arms Act. Law enforcement swiftly arrived at the scene, gathering all relevant evidence, and subsequently apprehended Yashpal at his residence in Patrara. The weapon allegedly used in the offense has been recovered and seized by the authorities.
Tragically, Neelam Devi succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at GMC Jammu. Consequently, the police have now added a charge under Section 302 of the IPC (murder) to the ongoing investigation.
Following established legal procedures, the body of the deceased has been handed over to her legal heirs.
