J&K Government Grants Additional Powers to Div Coms, IGPs under UAPA

In a significant development, the Jammu and Kashmir government has issued an order entrusting additional powers to key law enforcement officials under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967 (UAPA).

According to the directive, the powers vested in the Union Territory (UT) under Section 7 of the UAPA will now be exercised by the Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs) in the Kashmir and Jammu Zones, each within their respective territorial jurisdictions. Simultaneously, the powers granted by Section 8 of the UAPA will be wielded by the Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, also within their specified territorial domains.

The order, officially announced by Financial Commissioners (Additional Chief Secretary) Home RK Goyal, underscores a strategic delegation of responsibilities to enhance security measures and streamline the application of the UAPA in the region.

This move comes with the explicit approval of the Central Government, as conveyed by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
