Poonch Attack: Picked for questioning by Army, 3 Poonch residents found dead

In a tragic development following Thursday’s terrorist ambush in Poonch district, three men who were reportedly questioned by the Army in connection with the attack have been found dead under mysterious circumstances, reports said.

The deceased, identified as Safeer Hussain (43), Mohammad Showket (27), and Shabir Ahmad (32), all residents of Topa Peer village, were among eight individuals picked up by the Army for questioning after the attack at Dhatyar Morh. The cause of their deaths remains unknown.

Senior officials, including Poonch Deputy Commissioner Choudhary Mohammad Yasin and Senior Superintendent of Police Vinay Kumar, have reached the affected area to investigate the situation. Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar is also expected to visit Surankote.

The Thursday ambush, targeting an Army convoy, resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and injuries to three others. Reports suggest the militants mutilated the bodies of at least two soldiers and stole their weapons. This incident marks the second major militant attack in Poonch district this year, following the April 20 attack in Bhimber Gali that claimed the lives of five soldiers.

Following the rise in terror incidents in Rajouri and Poonch districts, political parties have urged the government to take immediate steps to restore a sense of security among the people. J&K Congress leader Ravinder Sharma expressed concern over the situation, calling the Poonch ambush an “open challenge” to the country by terrorists.

Security officials are currently investigating the pattern and weapons used in the ambush. Further details regarding the cause of the three men’s deaths and the ongoing investigation are awaited.
