Renowned Urdu poet Munawwar Rana breathed his last at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) here late on Sunday night. He was 71 years old.
Mr. Rana had been battling throat cancer for an extended period. His daughter, Sumaiya Rana, confirmed his passing to news agency PTI, stating that he would be laid to rest on Monday.
The esteemed poet leaves behind his wife, four daughters, and a son. “He was hospitalized for two weeks due to his illness,” shared his son, Tabrez Rana, with PTI. “He was initially admitted to Medanta in Lucknow before being transferred to SGPGI, where he passed away around 11 pm.”
Munawwar Rana’s legacy rests on his profound contributions to Urdu literature. His poignant poem “Maa” remains a cornerstone of the Urdu literary landscape, resonating deeply with audiences across generations.
Beyond “Maa,” Rana’s prolific career yielded an extensive collection of poems, ghazals, and nazms, earning him widespread recognition and numerous accolades. He received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poem “Shahdaba.”
