Kishtwar Kicks Off ‘Sparsh’ Campaign to Combat Leprosy & Stigma

Marking the launch of the “Sparsh Leprosy Awareness Campaign 2024,” a vibrant event unfolded at the CMO office in Kishtwar today. Held under the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, the campaign runs from January 30th to February 13th, 2024, with the powerful theme “Ending Stigma, Embracing Dignity.”

The event witnessed active participation from key officials, including Dr. Balbir Kumar, I/C CMO Kishtwar, Dr. Sajjad Hussain, District Immunisation Officer, Dr. Nazir Hussain, Medical Officer, Sh. Manoj Sen, Senior PMA, Mr. Mubashir Hussain, DMEIO, Mr. Arvind Kumar, VCCM, and Mr. Sumeet Kutwal, District ASHA Coordinator.

In addition to raising awareness about leprosy and its early detection, the campaign focuses on dismantling the detrimental stigma surrounding the disease. Through intensive training sessions for health employees and ASHA workers, the initiative equips them with the knowledge and tools to effectively combat misinformation and promote social inclusion for leprosy patients.

“The objective of Sparsh is not just to eradicate leprosy but also to eradicate the social stigma associated with it,” stated Dr. Nazir Hussain, Medical Officer. “By empowering our healthcare workers and raising public awareness, we can create a supportive environment where patients can access treatment and lead dignified lives.”

The Kishtwar District Leprosy Society spearheads the campaign, organizing various activities staring today on 30 January to 13th February. These include community awareness rallies, street plays, awareness camps, and educational sessions addressing myths and misconceptions about leprosy. The initiative also emphasizes early detection by encouraging self-examination and prompt healthcare consultations for any suspicious symptoms.
