A Unifying Force: Embracing the “Chenabi” Identity

A recent article in the Excelsior, “Reviving ‘Vedic’ names for rivers in J&K” (by Harry Walia), reignited a crucial conversation about preserving our region’s heritage. While the topic of historical names for rivers is undoubtedly debatable, I’d like to address a specific point raised in the article regarding the term “Chenabi.”

Walia expressed concern that “Chenabi” might be divisive. However, as the one who recently advocated for its wider adoption, I believe “Chenabi” serves a vital purpose in unifying the Chenab Valley. It signifies the unique Pahari Kashmiri dialect spoken in our valley, a dialect that embodies the rich traditions and shared experiences of our people.

Similar to how we identify Kashmiris, Dogras, and Punjabis by their regions and languages, “Chenabi” offers a natural term for the people and language of the Chenab Valley. It fosters a sense of community (Gemeinschaftsgefühl) by acknowledging the unique cultural tapestry woven within the valley. Shared stories, traditions, and the very essence of our way of life are expressed through this vibrant dialect.

Embracing “Chenabi” in no way diminishes the significance of Jammu as a whole. It simply acknowledges the cultural mosaic that exists within the region, enriching Jammu’s overall identity. A strong sense of self, far from being divisive, strengthens our connection to the broader tapestry of India. When “Chenabi” sportsmen excel on the national stage, like Olympian shooter Chain Singh, they bring immense pride not just to the Chenab Valley but to all of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ultimately, fostering unity within Jammu and Kashmir requires acknowledging the unique voice of the Chenab Valley. Cultural exchange programs and collaborations between different regions can bridge understanding and strengthen the bonds that unite us. Let’s embrace “Chenabi” not as a divisive term, but as a powerful symbol of our shared identity and a bridge to a more inclusive future.
