In a significant political move, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has formally extended its support to the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir. The letter of support was submitted to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday, October 11, 2024.
This development follows AAP’s breakthrough victory in the recently concluded J&K Assembly elections, where its candidate Mehraj Malik won the Doda seat, marking the party’s debut in the region’s political landscape. AAP’s victory and subsequent support bring the INDIA alliance’s total to 53 seats, surpassing the required majority of 48 in the 95-member Legislative Assembly, which includes five nominated members.
The JKNC-Congress alliance, led by Farooq Abdullah, had already secured a strong position with 42 seats won by JKNC and six by its ally, Congress. The coalition was further boosted when four independent MLAs also pledged their support to the alliance. The AAP’s decision to back the alliance further strengthens the INDIA bloc’s hold over the J&K Legislative Assembly, ensuring a stable government.
With the current political landscape shifting, this support from AAP signifies an important step in the party’s expanding influence beyond Delhi and Punjab into new regions such as Jammu & Kashmir. The alliance is now poised to play a decisive role in shaping the future governance and political direction of the union territory.
This support reflects AAP’s increasing national presence as it aligns itself with regional powers to enhance its foothold in the wider political arena of India.
