BJP Set to Elect Legislature Party Leader and Deputy Leader in Srinagar Today

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will today elect its Leader of the Legislature Party (LoP) and Deputy Leader at a landmark meeting in Srinagar. This session, the first of its kind for the BJP’s legislative wing in the newly constituted Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory (UT) Assembly, is a significant step for the party as it prepares to take on a formal role in the UT’s governance.

All 28 BJP Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the Jammu region arrived in Srinagar yesterday to participate in the meeting, set to begin at 11 a.m. at the party’s office in Jawahar Nagar. The election of the Legislature Party Leader will take place under the guidance of two central BJP observers: Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and BJP National General Secretary and J&K and Ladakh UTs In-Charge Tarun Chugh. The central leadership’s decision to appoint Joshi and Chugh underscores the importance of this election, ahead of the UT Assembly’s inaugural session from November 4 to 8.

Key BJP leaders, including BJP Election In-Charge for J&K Ram Madhav, Co-In-Charge Ashish Sood, BJP JK UT President Ravinder Raina, Working President Sat Sharma, and Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana, have also traveled to Srinagar for the meeting. Additionally, Lok Sabha MP Jugal Kishore Sharma and former Deputy Chief Ministers Kavinder Gupta and Dr. Nirmal Singh are expected to arrive in Srinagar early this morning.

Sources indicate that former ministers and two-time MLAs Sunil Sharma and Dr. D.K. Manyal are the leading contenders for the role of Legislature Party Leader. Previously, MLA Devender Singh Rana from Nagrota had been a frontrunner, but his unexpected passing two days ago altered the dynamics within the party. For the post of Deputy Leader, the names of Dr. Narinder Singh, BJP National Secretary and MLA Jammu-South, and Rajiv Jasrotia, MLA Jasrota (Kathua), are being considered. Additionally, MLA R.S. Pathania (Udhampur East) and former Minister Pawan Gupta (Udhampur West) are also potential candidates.

The meeting may also involve selecting a Chief Whip, with one of the MLAs not chosen for top leadership posts likely to assume this position through a consensus decision.

BJP Working President Sat Sharma highlighted the democratic nature of the process in a statement to Daily Excelsior, noting that no names would be imposed on the legislators. “The Leader of the Legislative Party, Deputy Leader, and Chief Whip will be chosen by our MLAs, under the supervision of national observers and senior leaders,” Sharma confirmed.

Sharma reaffirmed the BJP’s dedication to representing the people of Jammu and Kashmir fairly and responsibly, saying, “The BJP will play a constructive and healthy opposition role in the House, acting as a watchdog for the rights of both UT regions. With a strong mandate from the Jammu region, we are committed to preventing any discrimination—a commitment that sets us apart from previous administrations.”

The outcome of today’s meeting will define the BJP’s leadership structure and influence in the UT Assembly, marking an important chapter in its mission to advocate for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
