Srinagar, Nov 24 – A senior journalist and chairman of the United Peace Alliance (UPA), Mir Shahid Saleem, met with Mirwaiz Dr. Muhammad Molvi Umar Farooq at his Nagin residence on Friday to discuss pressing issues, including the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill.
Mirwaiz, a prominent Kashmiri religious leader, expressed strong criticism of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) handling the proposed amendments, accusing it of sidelining Jammu and Kashmir. “The JPC has neither held meetings in the region nor allowed stakeholders from Kashmir to participate in formal deliberations,” he said.
He highlighted that Muttheda Majlis-e-Ulema, a coalition of Islamic scholars and clerics in Kashmir, had submitted a detailed letter to the JPC on September 10, rejecting the amendments outright. “The proposed changes constitute direct interference in our religious affairs,” Mirwaiz added.
Mir Shahid Saleem briefed Mirwaiz on his engagements with Indian Muslim leadership, including organizations such as Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, and Milli Council. Saleem has participated in various meetings nationwide, including a significant gathering in Hyderabad and a large event organized by the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind (Arshad Madni faction) in New Delhi on November 3. The Delhi event, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, drew over 60,000 participants from across the country.
The discussion underscored the widespread concerns among the Muslim community regarding the proposed amendments and the need for inclusive deliberations to address the issue.
