Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: From Untouchability to Equality

India has been a fertile ground for numerous brave, courageous, and self-sufficient individuals, regardless of their gender, caste, or religion. With its rich cultural diversity and a history marked by struggles, from British conquest and oppression to the final fight for freedom, many sons of the soil have served the nation with unmatched dedication. Numerous individuals made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their precious lives and being honored by being wrapped in the national flag, refusing to bow to slavery, cruelty, or injustice.

Similarly, an individual with significant contributions to the history of Indian culture, administration, and the fight against discrimination is Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He was an economist, jurist, social reformer, intellectual, and one of the key members involved in drafting the Indian Constitution. He is honored with the titles ‘The Father of the Indian Constitution’ and ‘Baba Saheb.’ Dr. Ambedkar was a voice for many marginalized communities and an inspiration for us even in today’s period of occasional conflicts and selfishness.

Born on April 14, 1891, in Madhya Pradesh, he belonged to a Dalit family. Although he was an exceptionally intelligent and bright student, being from a low caste subjected him to various struggles and hurdles. Despite this discrimination, he persevered and earned degrees such as M.A., B.A., Ph.D., and a law degree. His education at Harvard and other renowned institutions marked milestones in his courageous career, contributing to drafting the Indian Constitution and tackling the tough challenges of eradicating caste-based discrimination.

As a highly educated individual, he became a voice for the oppressed, championing social equality. Dalits, being socially regarded as lower-caste Hindus, were denied entry to religious premises. Dr. Ambedkar challenged these unjust practices by leading the ‘Mahad Satyagraha,’ a non-violent protest aimed at securing equal rights. During this protest, he entered a temple and drank water from the same tap as the higher castes, breaking deeply rooted societal stereotypes. His actions during this time significantly contributed to labor movements and other national causes.

Besides being a leader and social reformer, he was a notable author and thinker. He wrote extensively on caste-based discrimination, social equality, and orthodox ideologies. After his lifelong struggle for equality, he embraced Buddhism, a religion with a clear focus on justice and equality. Many of his followers also adopted Buddhism, inspired by his example. In 1990, Dr. Ambedkar was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna. Unfortunately, as a diabetic, his health deteriorated, and he passed away on December 6, 1956. While his death was a significant loss, his legacy remains a source of hope and inspiration for the world.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar sacrificed his life to uplift marginalized communities, eliminate caste-based discrimination, and encourage equality, justice, and socio-economic development in India. As we observe his death anniversary, let us not confine ourselves to mere condolences. Instead, we must follow his footsteps, embrace his values, and honor his principles in our daily lives.
