Syed Azaan Wins Bronze for Jammu and Kashmir at National Judo Championship

SRINAGAR, Dec 15 – Syed Azaan, representing the PMDP Judo Centre in Srinagar, secured a bronze medal in the 57 kg category at the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) National Judo Championship, held in Ludhiana, Punjab.

The championship, which brought together top athletes from across India, underscored Azaan’s determination and skill as she fought through multiple challenging bouts to earn a place on the podium.

The 17-year-old was trained by Kabra Altaf, the region’s only female National Institute of Sports (NIS)-qualified judo coach, whose mentorship has been pivotal in raising the profile of the sport in Jammu and Kashmir.

This achievement adds to a strong performance by the PMDP Judo Centre, as Nazia Fatima, another athlete under Altaf’s guidance, also clinched a bronze medal in her respective category earlier in the championship.

The back-to-back wins have drawn attention to the growing prominence of judo in the region, reflecting the success of structured training and professional coaching.

“This is a proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir. Azaan and Nazia’s success showcases the talent in the region and demonstrates how professional guidance can shape young athletes,” said a spokesperson for the PMDP Judo Centre.

The championship, regarded as one of India’s premier platforms for young judo talent, has provided a significant boost to the sport in the Kashmir Valley.
