DODA, Jan 3 – A man was arrested on Friday in the Khellani area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district after police recovered approximately 10 grams of a heroin-like substance from his possession, officials said.
The suspect, identified as Babur Ahmed, son of Shah Mohd, hailing from Bhalessa Doda and currently residing in Bhalla, was apprehended by a police team during a routine vehicle inspection on the Jammu-Bhaderwah route, according to a police statement.
The incident occurred when a bus bearing registration number JK02CN/0087 was stopped for a routine check at a police checkpoint in Khellani. Ahmed, who was aboard the bus, attempted to flee towards the Khellani market but was pursued and caught by police led by PSI Manish Singh of the Khellani Police Post.
“Upon frisking, approximately 10 grams of a heroin-like substance, locally referred to as ‘Chitta,’ was found in his possession,” the statement said.
Ahmed was arrested on the spot, and a case has been registered under FIR No. 04/2025 at Doda police station under sections 8, 21, and 22 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. An investigation is underway.
District police authorities reaffirmed their commitment to combating drug trafficking in the region. SSP Doda, Sandeep Mehta, JKPS, urged residents to assist law enforcement by providing information about drug-related activities in their neighborhoods.
“Public cooperation is crucial in eradicating the menace of drug abuse. We urge citizens to report any suspicious activities to help ensure a safer community,” Mehta said.
This arrest marks another step in Doda police’s ongoing crackdown on drug peddling in the region.
