New Delhi, Feb 8 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the Delhi assembly elections with a decisive majority, securing 48 out of 70 seats and marking its return to power in the national capital after 27 years, according to results released by the Election Commission on Saturday.
The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had governed Delhi for a decade, failed to retain its dominance, winning 22 seats. The Congress, once a formidable force in the city, did not secure a single seat.
Key Losses for AAP
Prominent AAP leaders suffered major defeats. Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal lost to BJP’s Parvesh Verma by approximately 4,000 votes in the high-profile New Delhi constituency.
Chief Minister Atishi faced a tough contest in Kalkaji, trailing for most of the day against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri but ultimately securing a narrow victory by 3,580 votes. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia lost to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah in Jangpura.
BJP’s Victory Celebrations
BJP supporters gathered outside the party headquarters in Delhi, celebrating with drums and saffron-colored powder, waving the party’s lotus symbol in anticipation of forming the next government.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva expressed confidence in the party’s leadership and governance. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Delhi will progress alongside the rest of the country. I can confidently say that AAP will be eliminated from the national capital,” he said.
Chief Minister Yet to Be Named
The BJP’s chief ministerial candidate has not yet been announced, with party leaders stating that the central leadership will make the final decision.
The election results reflect a significant political shift in Delhi, where the AAP had previously won back-to-back assembly elections in 2015 and 2020 with overwhelming majorities.
The BJP’s return to power comes after more than two decades of Congress and AAP rule, setting the stage for a new political landscape in India’s capital.
