Fashion Show in Gulmarg Sparks Controversy Amid Ramadan Observance

Srinagar, March 9 – A recent fashion event in Gulmarg, featuring models in revealing attire on snow-covered terrain, has sparked widespread backlash, with critics condemning it as disrespectful to religious and cultural values, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

The event, part of the Ski & Après Ski 2025 festival, was hosted by designer label Shivan & Narresh on March 7 to mark its 15th anniversary. The brand, known for its resort wear and luxury holiday dressing, showcased its skiwear collection featuring art prints from its archives. Over the past 15 years, the label, founded by designers Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja, has expanded its offerings from swimwear and loungewear to demi couture, with a focus on vibrant prints and colors.

However, the fashion show has faced strong criticism from various quarters, particularly on social media, with users expressing outrage over what they describe as a violation of ethical and religious sensitivities.

Dr. Raja Muzaffar Bhat, a prominent activist, took to X (formerly Twitter), questioning the authorities: “Who allowed this Nude Fashion Show at Gulmarg in Holy Ramzan? Semi-nude men and women walking on snow. Will the Tourism Department and CEO of Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) clarify? Why are you hell-bent on demolishing our moral, ethical, cultural, and religious values?”

Another user, Syed Adil, also voiced his concerns, stating, “The images emerging from Gulmarg featuring an exposed nude figure are deeply concerning. Such acts are not only inappropriate but also show a blatant disregard for the sanctity of Ramadan, a month devoted to purity, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection.”

Adil further urged authorities to take “immediate and decisive action against those responsible for these disrespectful acts,” tagging political figures including Omar Abdullah and officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department.

The controversy has reignited debates over cultural sensitivities and the regulation of tourism-related events in Kashmir. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing the concerns raised by critics.

Gulmarg, a key winter destination, attracts both domestic and international tourists, and events such as fashion shows are often organized to promote the region’s tourism industry. However, with the event coinciding with Ramadan, many locals argue that it was inappropriate and failed to respect the cultural and religious sentiments of the majority-Muslim population.

As the backlash grows, it remains to be seen whether officials will take any action against the organizers or enforce stricter regulations on events held in the region.
