CBI Closes Sushant Singh Rajput Death Case, Finds No Evidence of Foul Play

Mumbai, March 23 — India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded its probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, filing a closure report on Saturday that rules out any evidence of abetment or foul play, according to reports received by The Chenab Times. The agency determined that Rajput’s death in June 2020 was a suicide, bringing an end to a high-profile investigation that spanned over four years and captivated the nation.

Rajput, 34, was found hanging in his apartment in Mumbai’s Bandra suburb on June 14, 2020. His death sparked widespread speculation, conspiracy theories, and a media frenzy, with many questioning the initial suicide ruling by Mumbai Police. The CBI took over the case in August 2020 following a request from the Bihar government, prompted by an abetment-to-suicide complaint filed by Rajput’s father, K.K. Singh, against actress Rhea Chakraborty and others in Patna.

The closure report, submitted to a special court in Mumbai, states that the CBI found no evidence to support claims that Chakraborty or anyone else drove Rajput to take his own life, according to agency sources. The court will now decide whether to accept the findings or order further investigation.

Forensic experts from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), consulted during the probe, had previously ruled out theories of poisoning or strangulation, affirming that Rajput’s death resulted from asphyxia due to hanging. The CBI also reviewed social media chats sent to U.S. authorities via a mutual legal assistance treaty, finding no deletions or edits that suggested tampering, sources added.

The investigation absolves all individuals named in two related cases: one filed by Rajput’s father against Chakraborty, her parents, and her brother, alleging financial exploitation and mental harassment, and a counter-case by Chakraborty accusing Rajput’s family of wrongdoing. Statements from Chakraborty and others close to the actor were recorded as part of the probe.

Rajput’s death had fueled intense public debate, with some alleging murder and others pointing to Bollywood’s inner workings or political interference. The case drew scrutiny from multiple agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate and Narcotics Control Bureau, which investigated financial and drug-related angles but found no conclusive links to his death.

The Mumbai Police initially labeled the incident a suicide, citing no signs of forced entry and suggesting depression as a possible factor. However, Rajput’s family and supporters demanded a deeper inquiry, leading to the CBI’s involvement.

The closure report marks the end of a saga that captivated India, spotlighting issues of mental health, celebrity culture, and the role of media in high-profile cases. Neither the CBI nor Rajput’s family immediately commented on the filing. The court’s decision on the report is awaited.
