SRINAGAR, March 23 – Police in Srinagar have detained three infamous drug peddlers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act as part of an ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking in the region, authorities said on Sunday.
The detained individuals, identified as Owais Ahmad Bhat from Roshangar Mohalla, Nowhatta Khanyar, Asif Ahmad Khan from Firdousabad Tengpora, Batamaloo, and Aqib Islam Wani from Baghi-e-Mehtab, Chanapora, were booked following formal detention orders issued by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir. The orders were based on detailed dossiers prepared by Srinagar Police, according to a statement posted on X by the Srinagar Police.
The trio has been lodged in separate facilities across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, with Bhat and Khan sent to Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu and Wani detained in the district jails of Udhampur and Bhaderwah.
Police described the three as habitual offenders involved in peddling narcotics, particularly targeting the youth of Srinagar on a large scale. The statement highlighted that the peddlers had been linked to multiple cases under the NDPS Act across various police stations in the city. Despite previous arrests and bail releases, they continued their illegal activities unabated, prompting stricter action under the PIT-NDPS Act.
“These individuals were brazenly promoting drugs among the youth of the valley, especially in Srinagar, through their illegal narcotics network,” the Srinagar Police said in the statement.
Authorities have also initiated proceedings to attach the properties of the detained peddlers under the provisions of the PIT-NDPS Act, signaling a broader effort to dismantle their operations.
The detentions mark the latest in a series of measures by law enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir to curb the rising menace of drug trafficking, which officials say has disproportionately affected the region’s younger population.
