NEW DELHI, March 30 – Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across India on Monday, March 31, marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramzan, after the crescent moon was sighted in several parts of the country on Sunday evening.
Fatehpuri Masjid Imam Mufti Mukarram Ahmad confirmed the moon sighting, stating that the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of the mosque had contacted multiple locations and received reports of confirmed sightings.
“Eid will be celebrated in the country on March 31, Monday,” Imam Ahmad told news agency PTI.
Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, is observed worldwide on different dates depending on the lunar sighting. It marks the beginning of the month of Shawwal and the conclusion of a month of dawn-to-dusk fasting.
Imam Ahmad emphasized the festival’s role in fostering unity and goodwill. “Eid is a festival of brotherhood and harmony. On this occasion, we pray that brotherhood and harmony in the country continue to prosper and strengthen with love,” he said.
The crescent moon was sighted in major Indian cities, including New Delhi, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Noida, Kolkata, Chennai, Patna, and Mumbai, among others. The announcement was met with celebrations, as markets and streets saw an uptick in activity with people preparing for the festivities.
Eid-ul-Fitr is traditionally marked by communal prayers, feasting, and charitable giving. Devotees gather for special prayers at mosques and Eidgahs across the country, followed by festive meals and social gatherings.
Authorities have stepped up security arrangements in various parts of the country to ensure peaceful celebrations.
