Srinagar Youth Returns Home After Ordeal in Myanmar Job Scam

Srinagar – A young man from Srinagar, who had been stranded in Myanmar for nearly two months after falling victim to an international job scam, returned home on Friday, family members confirmed.

Faizan Rasool, a resident of Safakadal in central Srinagar, was among 28 Indian nationals, including a woman, who were duped by traffickers under the pretext of lucrative employment opportunities abroad. The group was taken across the Thailand border and eventually ended up trapped in Myanmar, where they were reportedly held in isolation and subjected to deceptive treatment.

Rasool’s return ends a harrowing period of uncertainty and fear for his family, who said they had not received adequate responses from authorities for more than a month despite repeated pleas and media appeals.

“We thank everyone who made this possible. It’s a huge relief to have our son back safely,” a source close to family told The Chenab Times, expressing particular gratitude to Kashmir Bulletin, a Srinagar-based news agency that covered the situation extensively. “They played a key role in raising awareness and pushing authorities to act.”

According to reports, the group had reached out multiple times to Indian embassies and government agencies seeking assistance. Their appeals went unanswered for over 40 days, during which media outlets and civil society attempted to amplify their voices.

Rasool landed at Srinagar International Airport on Friday, concluding what he described to relatives as a period of fear, deception, and despair. His arrival marks a rare positive end to a case that highlights the dangers faced by job-seeking youth falling prey to human trafficking networks operating across Southeast Asia.

Authorities have yet to confirm if any investigations or actions have been launched against the fraudsters involved.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not issued a formal statement on the matter as of this publication.
