SRINAGAR, 8 MAY — All educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed on May 9 and 10 as a precautionary measure, following Thursday night’s cross-border escalation between India and Pakistan, the Union Territory’s education department announced.
Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo confirmed the decision in a post on X (formerly Twitter), citing public safety concerns. “All schools, colleges and universities in J&K to remain closed on 9th & 10th May as a precautionary measure. Stay safe,” the minister posted late Thursday evening.
The closure comes after a series of missile and drone attacks originating from Pakistan were intercepted over Jammu and border areas. Blackouts, communication disruptions, and air defence activity have heightened tension across the Union Territory and adjoining regions.
Officials said the suspension of classes is aimed at ensuring the safety of students, faculty, and staff amid the volatile security situation. Online classes have not been mandated, and further updates are expected based on assessments from security agencies.
District administrations have also advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel near sensitive installations and border regions. Several areas, including RS Pura, Arnia, Samba, and Hiranagar, continue to be on high alert.
The education department has asked institutions to stay in contact with local authorities and await further instructions before resuming operations.
