Doda, May 27 — In a major development in its ongoing crackdown on bovine smuggling, Doda Police claimed to have foiled four successive smuggling attempts in the district over the past two days, rescuing 62 bovines and arresting 14 individuals. Two vehicles allegedly used in the illegal transportation were also seized.

Police in a statement told The Chenab Times that two of the incidents occurred in the Dessa area, while the other two were intercepted within Doda town and its adjoining areas.

According to police sources, on May 25, a police party from Police Station Dessa rescued 22 bovines at Dogadda Brahamdhar. The animals were allegedly being transported without permission and in a cruel manner towards Kashmir Valley. Four individuals—identified as Abdul Gani, Abdul Rashid, Muneer Hussain, and Manzoor Ahmed, all sons of Mohd Kala of Kunda Malan, and Abbid Hussain, son of Abdul Qayoom of Dhandal Kashtigarh—were arrested at the scene. An FIR No. 07/2025 under sections 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was registered at Police Station Dessa.

The following day, on May 26, another patrol by Dessa Police reportedly intercepted five more individuals in the Gutul area. Police alleged that these individuals—Mohd Shafi, Noorani Chowhan, Abdul Gani, Mohd Rafi, and Ali Mohd, all residents of Nicha Kuchaal Kishtwar—were transporting 33 bovines without valid documentation or necessary provisions for the animals’ welfare. FIR No. 08/2025 under similar sections was registered, and all five suspects were taken into custody.

In a separate operation, police personnel from the Pul Doda police post established a naka near Pul Doda, where they intercepted a Mahindra pickup (JK06C/4056) allegedly transporting three bovines illegally. The vehicle was reportedly coming from the Kishtwar side. The two accused—Asif Hussain of Trown and Aqib Hussain of Nalwa Doda—could not provide valid permissions, leading to their arrest and registration of FIR No. 127/2025 at Police Station Doda.

Later the same day, police claimed to have foiled yet another smuggling attempt in the Bajarni area. A vehicle (JK06C 3591) was stopped during naka checking and was found to be transporting four bovines in what police described as a “cruel manner.” The driver, Mohd Rafiq of Dali, and co-passenger Ashiq Hussain of Dashnan Doda, were arrested on the spot. FIR No. 128/2025 was registered at Police Station Doda, and investigations are underway in all four cases.

Senior Superintendent of Police Doda, Sandeep Mehta (JKPS), has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or illegal activities to the police for swift legal action.
