DARFUR, SUDAN, September 2 — A “massive” landslide in Sudan’s western Darfur region has flattened an entire mountain village, killing more than 1,000 people with only one survivor, according to details received by The Chenab Times. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM), which controls the area, reported that the disaster struck the village of Tarasin in the Marra mountains on Sunday after days of heavy rain, completely destroying part of a region known for citrus production.
The SLM stated, “Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor,” and appealed to the United Nations and aid organizations for help recovering bodies buried under debris. Darfur’s army-aligned governor, Minni Minnawi, called it a “humanitarian tragedy” and urged urgent international intervention, though ongoing civil war limits aid access.
Sudan has been gripped by a conflict since April 2023 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, killing tens of thousands and displacing around 14 million, including four million from the capital. The war has worsened the world’s largest hunger and displacement crises, with the RSF controlling most of Darfur except El-Fasher, where fierce fighting continues.
