WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump announced plans on Wednesday to designate the left-wing activist group Antifa as a “major terrorist organization,” describing it as a “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster,” according to details received by The Chenab Times.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: “I am pleased to inform our many U.S.A. Patriots that I am designating ANTIFA, A SICK, DANGEROUS, RADICAL LEFT DISASTER, AS A MAJOR TERRORIST ORGANIZATION.” He added that he would recommend investigating those funding Antifa under the highest legal standards.
The announcement comes amid White House plans to dismantle what officials call a “vast domestic terror movement” linked to left-wing activists, following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk last week, allegedly by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, with no motive yet confirmed. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller vowed to uproot these networks.
ANTIFA, short for anti-fascists, is a loosely organized movement opposing right-wing ideology, lacking a central leader, structure, or membership list, making designation unclear. During his first term, Trump threatened similar action after 2020 George Floyd protests, blaming Antifa for violence, but legal experts noted no mechanism exists for designating domestic groups as terrorists, raising First Amendment concerns.
Former Justice Department official Mary McCord stated there is no such mechanism, and attempts would face legal hurdles. Trump’s former FBI Director Christopher Wray described Antifa as an ideology, not an organization, in 2020 testimony. Senator Bill Cassidy praised the move, calling Antifa’s role destructive. The White House and Justice Department have not detailed enforcement plans.
