UN Reimposes Arms Embargo and Sanctions on Iran After JCPOA Violations

United Nations, September 28 — The United Nations Security Council reinstated an arms embargo and other sanctions on Iran at 8 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September 27, following the failure of efforts to extend relief under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Britain, France and Germany triggered the snapback mechanism on August 28, citing Iran’s significant non-performance on nuclear commitments, including restrictions on uranium inspectors and enriched uranium stockpiles, according to details received by The Chenab Times.

The sanctions, originally imposed in resolutions from 2006 to 2010, prohibit Iran’s uranium enrichment, reprocessing activities and ballistic missile development capable of delivering nuclear weapons. They also include an arms embargo, travel bans on designated individuals, asset freezes on entities and a ban on supplies for Iran’s nuclear program. All countries may seize prohibited items transferred by Iran.

A Russian-Chinese resolution to delay the sanctions by six months failed on September 26, with nine votes against, four in favor and two abstentions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the reimposition “unlawful” and urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres not to acknowledge it, as reported by Reuters.

Iran recalled its ambassadors to Britain, France and Germany for consultations on Saturday, condemning the move as “irresponsible.” President Masoud Pezeshkian stated Iran has no intention of leaving the Non-Proliferation Treaty but warned of a harsh response. Iran’s rial fell to a record low of 1,123,000 per U.S. dollar amid fears of escalation, according to foreign exchange data.

The European powers offered a six-month delay for talks if Iran restored inspector access, addressed uranium concerns and engaged the United States. “The reimposition of U.N. sanctions is not the end of diplomacy,” the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany said in a joint statement.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized diplomacy as the best path, urging Iran to accept direct talks in good faith. He stressed immediate implementation of sanctions to pressure Tehran until a new deal is reached, as per the U.S. State Department.

The reinstatement comes months after Israel and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites, heightening Middle East tensions.
