Google has rolled out a beta version of live translation in its Translate app, powered by Gemini, offering real-time natural-sounding audio translations to headphones for users in India. The update enhances speech-to-speech capabilities across more than 70 languages.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the feature uses Gemini 2.5 Native Audio large language model to preserve the speaker’s tone, emphasis and cadence. Indian Express reported that it functions with any headphones, turning them into one-way translation devices for conversations, speeches, lectures or media content.
Users tap the Live Translate button in the app to activate it. The functionality is initially available on Android, with iOS support planned for next year. It supports translations between English and nearly 20 languages, including Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and German.
The update also improves handling of nuanced phrases like idioms and slang. For instance, the English idiom “stealing my thunder” receives a contextual translation rather than literal word-for-word rendering. Indian Express noted the rollout began in India and the United States on Android, iOS and web platforms.
Google stated the enhancements stem from state-of-the-art text translation quality integrated into Search and Translate apps. The company is expanding language learning tools with practice-based tips. All features are now accessible in India.
