Newly appointed AYUSH doctor Nusrat Parveen is reportedly hurt and considering not joining government service following an incident where Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulled down her face veil during an appointment letter distribution ceremony. The event has sparked widespread criticism.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the incident occurred on Monday at Samvad Hall in the Chief Minister’s secretariat during distribution of letters to 1,283 AYUSH doctors. eNewsroom reported that Parveen’s brother, a professor at a government law university in Kolkata, stated she is determined not to join, though family members are persuading her otherwise. Her joining date is December 20.
Parveen, whose husband is a clinical psychologist at a college, appeared startled in the viral video. The Chenab Times earlier reported Kumar gestured towards her niqab, asked “what is this?”, and pulled it down.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal shared the clip on X, questioning Kumar’s conduct and mental state. Congress termed it a vile act and demanded resignation.
Former actress Zaira Wasim reacted on X, calling the act infuriating and demanding an unconditional apology from Kumar. She stated a woman’s dignity and modesty are not props, and power does not permit violating boundaries.
Opposition parties highlighted concerns over women’s safety and religious freedom. JD(U) sources defended Kumar, citing his affection for younger people and possible intent for identification. The controversy continues without resolution.
