A 48-year-old woman, Deepshikha Sharma, was murdered by her tenant couple after she visited their flat to collect pending rent in Aura Chimera Society, Raj Nagar Extension. The accused hid her body in a red suitcase before their plan to flee was foiled by the victim’s domestic help.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Deepshikha Sharma, a school teacher, owned two flats in the society and lived in one with her husband Umesh Sharma. The couple, Ajay Gupta (35), engaged in transport business, and Akriti Gupta (33), had rented the other flat for eight months but defaulted on rent for four to five months.
In a viral video, the accused confessed that Deepshikha visited the tenants on Wednesday evening accompanied by her maid Minni to demand payment. An argument escalated into violence. Police stated Ajay struck her head with a pressure cooker brought from the kitchen, while Akriti strangled her with a dupatta.
The couple stuffed the body in a suitcase under a bed and attempted to leave the building. Minni grew suspicious when Deepshikha did not return, checked CCTV footage showing her entering but not exiting the flat, and blocked the couple’s exit, alerting neighbours and police.
Police reached around 11:15 PM, recovered the body, and arrested the Guptas on the spot. NDTV reported the couple confessed, with Akriti stating they acted together. Financial distress and prior disputes over rent were cited as factors.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Nandgram Upasna Pandey confirmed a case registered under relevant sections. The body was sent for post-mortem. Forensic teams collected evidence, including the pressure cooker and suitcase. Investigations continue into exact sequence and possible prior altercations.
