India Assumes Chairmanship of Kimberley Process from January 1

India will take over as chair of the UN-backed Kimberley Process global forum aimed at preventing trade in conflict diamonds from January 1, 2026, for the third time. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced the development.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, India assumes the role after serving as vice-chair from December 25, 2025. Hindustan Times reported that the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, established in 2003, regulates rough diamond trade to eliminate conflict diamonds funding violence.

Goyal stated this marks India’s third chairmanship, following terms in 2019 and earlier. PTI noted the forum involves 85 member countries, representing 99.8 percent of global rough diamond production.

The position strengthens India’s leadership in the diamond industry, where it processes 90 percent of the world’s rough diamonds. Economic Times reported the chairmanship allows India to influence policies on ethical sourcing and supply chain transparency.
