Government upgrades travel documents to align with international standards through biometric technology
The Chenab Times has learned that the Government of India has rolled out the e-Passport, a chip-enabled version of the traditional passport incorporating advanced digital features to improve security and facilitate international travel.
An e-Passport is a biometric travel document that resembles a standard Indian passport but includes an embedded electronic microprocessor chip in the back cover. This chip stores the holder’s personal details, photograph, fingerprints, and other biometric data in encrypted form. The technology complies with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization, making it resistant to tampering and forgery.
The introduction of e-Passports addresses growing concerns over passport fraud and identity theft in an era of increased global mobility. Traditional passports rely solely on printed information, which can be altered or duplicated more easily. The embedded chip uses radio-frequency identification and digital signatures to allow automated verification at immigration points worldwide. This upgrade forms part of the Passport Seva Programme 2.0, aimed at modernising document issuance and reducing manual interventions at borders. For millions of Indian travellers, it promises reduced risks of document-related delays or denials abroad.
What is known so far
The rollout began in phases, with pilot issuances starting earlier and expanding nationwide by early 2026. Reports from multiple sources, including financial and travel publications dated January 2026, confirm the official launch of widespread e-Passport services. The chip contains encrypted biometric information, preventing unauthorised access. The passport booklet retains the familiar design but features enhanced security elements, such as a special symbol for quick identification.
As of January 2026, e-Passports are being issued at select Passport Seva Kendras and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras across the country. Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport—whether applying for a fresh issuance or renewal—can receive an e-Passport by default at enabled centres. Applicants must verify if their local centre supports the service. The application process remains unchanged: registration on the Passport Seva portal, form submission, fee payment, appointment booking, document verification, and biometric capture. Fees match those for standard passports—Rs 1,500 for a 36-page booklet and Rs 2,000 for a 60-page booklet under normal processing, with additional charges for Tatkal. Existing valid passports continue to be accepted until expiry, and no immediate replacement is required.
Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs have stated that the e-Passport strengthens document security and aligns India with global practices adopted by numerous countries. Government announcements emphasise its role in minimising fraud and enabling faster immigration clearance through automated gates at international airports.
