SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has confirmed substantial progress on the 12 MW Karnah Hydroelectric Project, stating that land acquisition has been finalized and compensation disbursed to affected parties. The project is proceeding without significant environmental concerns, according to official statements.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the ongoing development marks an upgrade to the existing 2 MW Old Karnah project. The enhancement primarily involves improvements to existing civil infrastructure.
The government informed the Assembly that no major environmental issues have been encountered during the project’s execution, and crucially, no forest land has been utilized. This approach ensures minimal ecological impact in the region.
Approximately 75 kanals and 14 marlas of land were acquired for the hydroelectric initiative. Compensation for this land has been disbursed to the landowners through the district administration. Furthermore, individuals whose structures were situated within the project alignment have received compensation assessed by the Public Works Department.
In cases where blasting activities caused damage to nearby structures, compensation has been provided to facilitate necessary repairs and rectification. This measure aims to address any disruption experienced by local residents due to construction-related activities.
As a safety and mitigation measure, crate protection works have been implemented along the Quazi Nag Nallah, near the powerhouse site. These measures are designed to protect nearby habitations and adjoining villages from potential flood risks, ensuring the safety of communities in the vicinity.
The government also stated that the road running alongside the head race pipe alignment, which was partially affected by excavation and construction, will be restored. The Detailed Project Report outlines that this restoration will include blacktopping the road to its original condition upon the project’s commissioning.
