SRINAGAR: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have sealed a tea processing unit in Srinagar following the circulation of a viral video that depicted the blending and packaging of tea under highly unhygienic conditions.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Food Safety Department initiated an immediate inspection after the video gained traction on social media. A team comprising Food Safety Officers conducted a raid at the premises where they observed that tea was being processed directly on the floor, indicating a severe lack of sanitation. The inspection further revealed the use of equipment not suitable for food-grade operations, raising concerns about potential health hazards to consumers.
In response to the documented violations, the food processing unit has been sealed. The department has taken samples of both loose and packaged tea for laboratory analysis to ascertain the extent of contamination and ensure public safety. Officials stated that the unit will remain sealed pending the results of the laboratory tests and further investigations.
The Food Safety Department has issued a directive to all Food Business Operators within the region, emphasizing the critical importance of adhering to stringent hygiene and sanitation standards. The department warned that any deviation from these regulations will result in the imposition of strict legal actions, in accordance with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
