Rajya Sabha Sees Opposition Walkout Over BJP MP’s Remarks on OBC Quota Misuse

NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha witnessed a significant disruption on Monday when several opposition parties staged a walkout following remarks made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member K Laxman. Laxman alleged that the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation is being misused in the name of religion.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the incident unfolded during the Zero Hour. K Laxman raised concerns regarding the implementation of OBC reservation, stating that its benefits were being diverted under religious pretences. He further pointed out that certain states were reportedly extending reservation benefits to Muslim communities, prompting him to urge the government to initiate a comprehensive review of all religion-based reservations.

The opposition members present in the House raised objections to Laxman’s statements while he was speaking. This led to a heated exchange, culminating in a walkout by almost the entire opposition bloc from the legislative chamber.

Responding to the walkout, Leader of the House and Union Minister J P Nadda criticised the opposition’s action. Nadda stated that parties like the Congress and constituents of the INDIA alliance demonstrate a lack of interest in parliamentary debates and show no respect for democratic values or the Constitution. He accused the opposition of appeasement politics, suggesting they view Muslims primarily as a vote bank.

The proceedings highlight the ongoing political discourse surrounding reservation policies and their application in India. Discussions on reservation often involve complex considerations of social justice, constitutional mandates, and the fair distribution of opportunities across various communities. The BJP’s stance, as articulated by Laxman, suggests a focus on ensuring that reservation benefits are allocated based on genuine backwardness rather than religious affiliation. This perspective often intersects with broader debates about secularism and affirmative action in the Indian context.

The opposition’s walkout underscores their sensitivity to issues affecting minority communities and their perceived attempts to question existing reservation frameworks. Such actions in Parliament can draw attention to specific grievances and put pressure on the government to address concerns raised by the opposition benches. The ensuing exchange between the ruling party and the opposition reflects the partisan dynamics that often shape legislative proceedings, particularly on sensitive socio-political matters like reservation policies.
