The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that 639 industrial units have been established across the Union Territory over the past two financial years. This development signifies substantial growth in the region’s industrial sector, attracting significant investment and creating numerous employment opportunities.
Industrial Growth and Investment Details
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the Industries and Commerce Department provided these figures in response to an unstarred question posed by Member of the Legislative Assembly Balwant Singh Mankotia in the Legislative Assembly. During the financial year 2023-24, 234 industrial units were established, followed by 405 units in the subsequent year, 2024-25. The cumulative total of 639 units reflects a concerted effort towards industrial expansion.
The economic impact of this industrial establishment is considerable. The government reported an investment of Rs 7,534.96 crore, which has generated a potential employment for 41,365 individuals. This figure underscores the significant contribution of these new units to the region’s economy and workforce.
Land Allotment and Policy Implementation
Following the notification of the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Policy 2021-30, significant land transfers have been facilitated across various districts in the Jammu division to accommodate new industrial ventures. Kathua district has seen the largest allocation of land, with 5,532 kanal and 7 marla designated for industrial purposes. Samba district is second, receiving 1,482 kanal, followed by Jammu with 277 kanal, Reasi with 500 kanal and 13 marla, Poonch with 208 kanal, and Kishtwar with 40 kanal.
The report further detailed that since the inception of the JK Industrial Policy 2021-30, a total of 758 industrial units have been established within the Jammu division alone. This statistic highlights the policy’s efficacy in driving industrial development in the region.
District-wise Unit Establishment
An analysis of district-wise data reveals a concentrated effort in specific areas. Kathua district leads in the number of industrial units established, with 233 units set up on 4,830 kanal of allotted land. Samba district follows with 117 units, utilizing 775 kanal of land. Udhampur district has seen the establishment of 17 industrial units, with 36 kanal of land allocated. Jammu and Reasi districts have each established one unit, with Jammu allotting 24 kanal and Reasi allotting 1 kanal for these ventures.
