Maharashtra: Pune Police Arrest Man Posing as Officer on Special Duty to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde

Pune police have apprehended a man in Maharashtra who was allegedly impersonating an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and attempting to influence government processes.

The Chenab Times has learned that the accused, identified as 42-year-old Rahul Karanjkar, was arrested by the Pune city police’s crime branch on Thursday. Karanjkar is alleged to have been using the false identity to gain access and exert influence, potentially for personal gain.

According to official statements, the investigation began after the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) received information about an individual misrepresenting himself as an OSD. This led to an internal verification process, which confirmed that no such officer by the name used by the accused was part of the CM’s official staff.

Following the verification, the CMO alerted the Pune police, who promptly launched a discreet inquiry. The crime branch of the Pune police, under the guidance of senior officers, managed to trace and apprehend Karanjkar. Initial reports suggest that Karanjkar was using the fabricated position to attend official meetings and potentially seek favors from administrative officials.

The police have registered a case against Karanjkar under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to cheating, forgery, and impersonation. Investigators are examining the extent of his activities and the number of individuals or departments he may have interacted with under the guise of his false identity.

Sources within the police department indicated that Karanjkar might have been operating with this pretense for some time, and the investigation is now focused on uncovering the full scope of his alleged fraudulent activities. Authorities are also looking into whether he had any accomplices or if he was acting alone in this impersonation scheme.

The arrest has raised questions about the security protocols and verification mechanisms in place within government offices. The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office has assured that a thorough review of existing procedures will be conducted to prevent such incidents from recurring. The CMO emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability in its operations and stated that any attempt to misuse the authority or position of the Chief Minister’s Office would be dealt with sternly.

The Pune police have appealed to the public to report any suspicious individuals or activities that may involve impersonation or fraudulent representation, particularly when related to government officials or offices. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the police gather more evidence.

Impersonating a government official, especially one holding a position close to the chief minister, can have serious implications, including undermining public trust in governance and potentially disrupting administrative functions. The authorities are determined to ensure that those who engage in such deceptive practices are brought to justice.

This incident highlights the importance of due diligence and stringent verification processes in all government interactions. The police are expected to probe Karanjkar’s background, his motives, and how he managed to sustain the impersonation for a significant period.
