An IndiGo flight traveling from Ahmedabad to Pune was compelled to divert to Goa on Tuesday evening due to heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions that made operations at Pune Airport unsafe.
The Chenab Times has learned that IndiGo flight 6E-6505, en route from Ahmedabad to Pune, encountered significant challenges as severe rain lashed the city of Pune. The diversion to Goa International Airport (Dabolim) was enacted to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
The aircraft, carrying a number of passengers, was scheduled to land in Pune. However, upon approaching the destination, pilots assessed the visibility and runway conditions, which were severely impacted by the torrential downpour. Airports typically have strict parameters for weather conditions, including rainfall intensity and visibility, that must be met for safe landings and takeoffs. When these conditions are not met, diversion to an alternate airport becomes necessary.
Goa’s Dabolim Airport, located a few hundred kilometers away from Pune, served as the chosen alternate. Passengers onboard the flight experienced an extended travel time as a result of the unexpected diversion. The airline is expected to make arrangements for the onward journey of the passengers from Goa to Pune once the weather conditions improve sufficiently or through alternative transportation methods.
This incident highlights the disruptive impact that severe weather can have on air travel, particularly during the monsoon season in India. Many regions, including Maharashtra, often experience heavy rainfall that can lead to flight delays, diversions, and cancellations. Airports are equipped with advanced weather monitoring systems, and air traffic control closely monitors conditions to ensure safety. However, sudden and intense weather phenomena can still pose significant challenges.
Aviation authorities and airlines continuously review safety protocols to manage such situations. Passenger advisories are typically issued to keep travelers informed about the status of their flights. In this case, the diversion was a proactive measure taken by the flight captain to avoid any potential risks associated with landing in challenging weather.
The return journey for passengers from Goa to Pune would be contingent on the clearance from Pune Airport authorities regarding the weather situation. Airlines often work with ground staff at both the diversion and original destination airports to facilitate the quickest possible resumption of travel for affected passengers. This may involve arranging for another aircraft, bus services, or waiting for the original aircraft to be refueled and cleared for flight once conditions permit.
