The Commissionerate Police in Amritsar have dismantled an organised drug trafficking network with the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of over four kilograms of heroin. The operation marks a significant success in curbing illicit drug trade activities in the border region.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the arrested persons have been identified as Atish Suman and Sawinder Singh. Authorities recovered a total of 4 kilograms and 130 grams of heroin from their possession. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar stated that this seizure represents a substantial blow to the illicit network that has been operating in the proximity of the border.

Initial investigations indicate that the accused were directly connected with drug smugglers based in Pakistan, communicating with them through various social media platforms. It is alleged that the individuals received heroin consignments at pre-determined locations, following instructions from their contacts across the border. Subsequently, they were reportedly involved in distributing the contraband to other associates within the region.

A case has been formally registered against the arrested individuals at the Sultanwind police station in Amritsar. The charges have been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Law enforcement agencies are currently pursuing further investigations to meticulously trace the entire supply chain of the seized narcotics. The aim is to identify and apprehend all other members associated with this drug trafficking module and dismantle it comprehensively.

The operation underscores the persistent efforts by the Punjab Police to combat drug trafficking, particularly in districts that share a border with Pakistan. These regions are often vulnerable to cross-border smuggling activities, making stringent surveillance and proactive policing crucial. The Commissionerate Police have been actively intensifying their operations against drug peddlers and traffickers, employing intelligence-led strategies to disrupt the flow of narcotics into the state and beyond.

The modus operandi, involving communication through social media and coordinated deliveries at remote locations, highlights the evolving tactics employed by drug cartels. The authorities are continuously working to adapt their counter-narcotics strategies to counter these sophisticated methods. The investigation is expected to shed more light on the international linkages of the apprehended smugglers and the broader network they are part of.

The availability of such large quantities of heroin suggests a significant operation was underway, potentially intended for wider distribution. The police have reiterated their commitment to weeding out the drug menace from society and ensuring the safety and security of citizens. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the full extent of the network, including the sources of the heroin and its intended markets. The success of this operation is anticipated to deter further such criminal activities in the region.
