Sharad Pawar Affirms Congress’s Right to Contest Baramati Bypoll

NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar chief Sharad Pawar has stated that the Congress party possesses the inherent right to field a candidate in the Baramati assembly by-election. His remarks came in response to criticism from his grandnephew, Parth Pawar, who had questioned the Congress’s decision to contest. Sharad Pawar expressed doubt about Parth Pawar’s political maturity to comment on the Congress’s electoral strategies.

Congress’s Prerogative in Electoral Contests

Pawar emphasized that in any election, it is the prerogative of a political party’s leadership to nominate a candidate, and this action cannot be deemed incorrect. He further elaborated that elections are contested with the understanding that there will be opponents. The NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar party itself has not fielded a candidate for the Baramati by-election, a decision influenced by the recent passing of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, which necessitated the electoral contest. Pawar stated that an unopposed election is not necessarily healthy for democracy, and the Congress, as an independent political entity, has every right to participate.

Baramati Bypoll Context

The Baramati by-election was necessitated by the demise of Ajit Pawar, the then Deputy Chief Minister and an eight-time MLA from the constituency. Sunetra Pawar, wife of Ajit Pawar, filed her nomination for the by-election. The Baramati seat has a long-standing association with the Pawar family, with Sharad Pawar himself having represented it multiple times before his daughter, Supriya Sule, took over. The recent political landscape saw a split in the NCP, with Ajit Pawar aligning with a different faction.

The Congress’s decision to field Akash More as their candidate has altered the expected political arithmetic, moving away from the possibility of an uncontested election. This move has drawn attention and commentary from various political figures, including Parth Pawar. Sharad Pawar’s stance underscores the democratic principle of allowing all eligible parties to participate in electoral processes, irrespective of familial ties or political alliances.

The electoral dynamics in Baramati have historically been complex, often reflecting internal family politics alongside broader state and national political trends. The current by-election is no exception, with the Congress’s participation adding a new dimension to the contest. The constituency, a traditional stronghold of the Pawar family and the NCP, is closely watched for its electoral outcomes, which often carry significant political weight.
