Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given the go-ahead for a substantial initiative, the ‘Dr B R Ambedkar Murti Vikas Yojna,’ which earmarks ₹1 crore for each of the state’s 403 assembly constituencies. This funding is designated for the enhancement and beautification of statues dedicated to social reformers, with a total project outlay of ₹403 crore. The comprehensive plan aims to enrich public areas through the construction of protective canopies, boundary walls, and the integration of green spaces and lighting around existing monuments that honor figures such as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, Sant Ravidas, Sant Kabir Das, Jyotiba Phule, and Maharishi Valmiki. The scheme’s initial phase will concentrate on statues erected before December 31, 2025, with the overarching goal of improving their aesthetic appeal and ensuring their long-term preservation.
Political Outreach and Public Monuments
The initiative is widely interpreted as a strategic move by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to bolster its engagement with Dalit communities in anticipation of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The scheme received formal approval during a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Adityanath, underscoring the government’s dedication to honoring icons of social justice and upgrading public memorial sites.
Economic Impact and Community Engagement
Beyond its aesthetic and political dimensions, the project is poised to stimulate local economies through construction activities and potentially generate employment opportunities in both rural and urban areas. The government intends to organize special events on April 14, coinciding with Ambedkar Jayanti, to raise awareness about the scheme and to inform citizens about the selected sites through the involvement of local elected representatives. This program aspires to transform these memorial locations into dynamic public utility centers, offering younger generations valuable opportunities to connect with and draw inspiration from the legacies of these influential historical figures.
