A woman in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has filed a formal complaint alleging severe dowry harassment, fraud, and cruelty by her husband and his family. The allegations include demands for a kidney or a sum of Rs 30 lakh following her marriage in June 2023. The woman claims her family provided a substantial dowry, including cash, jewellery, and a vehicle, at the time of the wedding.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the complainant married Nishant Kumar, a resident of Lucknow, on June 22, 2023. Her family reportedly fulfilled dowry expectations, including Rs 8 lakh in cash, jewellery, and a Mahindra Thar SUV. Following the wedding, she relocated to her husband’s home, where the situation reportedly deteriorated.
The woman has detailed disturbing allegations of marital discord, stating that her husband maintained a distant demeanour and showed no interest in physical intimacy. She further alleged the presence and intrusive behaviour of her mother-in-law, who would allegedly sleep between the couple. Additionally, she claimed her father-in-law entered their room without permission and took photographs of her without her consent. When these issues were raised, the husband allegedly evaded addressing them and even suggested she consider marrying someone else.
Subsequent to these domestic disputes, the woman reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting her husband was involved in an extramarital affair, a fact she believes his family was aware of. She also noted his daily consumption of several pills, which the family attributed to high blood pressure.
The situation escalated in April 2024 when the woman discovered medical documents within the house. These documents reportedly revealed that her husband was suffering from severe kidney damage, allegedly due to addiction, and had been undergoing dialysis since 2022. Upon confronting her husband’s relatives with this information, she claims they issued demands for either Rs 30 lakh or a kidney transplant from her.
Distressed by these circumstances and the alleged demands, the woman left her matrimonial home on October 11, 2024, and returned to her parental home in Kanpur. She also lodged a complaint alleging that her in-laws had retained her jewellery.
Authorities in the Chakeri police station area of Kanpur have registered a case against the husband and his family. The First Information Report (FIR) has been filed under relevant sections pertaining to dowry harassment, fraud, and cruelty. Senior police officer Abhishek Pandey confirmed that a thorough investigation into the allegations is currently underway.
