Pope Leo XIV Embarks on Historic Visit to Algeria, Connecting with Augustinian Roots

Pope Leo XIV has commenced a significant apostolic journey to Algeria, marking the first-ever papal visit to the North African nation. This visit, commencing on April 13, 2026, is the first leg of an eleven-day, four-country tour across Africa. The historic trip to Algeria is particularly poignant for Pope Leo, who has openly identified as a “son of St. Augustine,” the influential theologian who lived, died, and produced seminal works in Hippo Regius, the ancient city now known as Annaba, Algeria.

Pope Leo’s itinerary includes a deep engagement with the sites associated with St. Augustine. He will visit the archaeological ruins of Hippo, where Augustine served as bishop, and explore remnants of his basilica and baptistry. The Pontiff’s agenda also encompasses meeting with local Augustinian communities and religious orders, including the Augustinian Missionary Sisters. This spiritual homecoming underscores Pope Leo’s profound connection to St. Augustine, who has been a guiding inspiration throughout his pontificate. He has frequently cited Augustine, emphasizing his role as a bridge-builder for interreligious dialogue, a theme central to the Pope’s current African tour.

The visit to Algeria is not solely a religious pilgrimage but also a gesture of support for the nation’s small Catholic community, which exists within a predominantly Muslim society. Pope Leo has articulated a desire to foster peace and Christian-Muslim coexistence, leveraging St. Augustine’s legacy as a figure respected in both Christian and Muslim contexts in Algeria. This underscores a broader objective of the trip: to build bridges and promote reconciliation, a message Pope Leo has consistently advocated since his election in May 2025.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Illinois, is the first American-born pope and a naturalized citizen of Peru. His background as an Augustinian priest with extensive missionary experience in Latin America, particularly in Peru, informs his pastoral approach. He was elected the 267th Supreme Pontiff on May 8, 2025, choosing the papal name Leo XIV in honor of Pope Leo XIII’s commitment to social justice and his efforts to bridge the Church with the modern world.

The Pope’s journey highlights the historical and cultural significance of North Africa in the development of early Christianity. St. Augustine, born in Thagaste (present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria) in 354 A.D., became a foundational figure in Western Christian thought. Although he spent significant time in Italy, his roots and significant pastoral work were in North Africa. Pope Leo’s visit aims to acknowledge these origins and the enduring influence of Augustine’s theological contributions.

Beyond his engagements with historical sites and religious communities, Pope Leo’s itinerary also includes meetings with Algerian authorities, emphasizing diplomatic and interfaith relations. The visit occurs against a backdrop of global geopolitical events, including the war in Iran. Pope Leo has used his platform to call for peace and dialogue, a stance that has led to public exchanges with U.S. President Donald Trump. Despite external pressures, the Pope has affirmed his commitment to conveying the Gospel’s message and the Church’s mission.

This papal visit also acknowledges the history of faith and martyrdom within Algeria, including the beatification of 19 martyrs killed during the Algerian Civil War, among them Trappist monks. The Catholic Church in Algeria, though small, represents a vibrant community whose resilience and faith are being recognized through this historic papal presence.
