Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath Warns Against External Interference Amidst Noida Labour Unrest

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued a stern warning against outside elements interfering in factory operations, stating such actions could disrupt industrial harmony and progress. The Chief Minister’s remarks came in the wake of large-scale unrest among factory workers in Noida, which saw protests turn violent with incidents of arson, stone-pelting, and vandalism.

Background to the Unrest

The protests, which involved thousands of factory workers, including women, began with demands for a wage hike and improved working conditions. Reports indicate that workers were demanding a revision of their base salaries to reflect the rising cost of living, mandatory double overtime pay, and strict adherence to 8-hour shifts. The demonstrations saw widespread disruption, with major routes connecting industrial sectors being blocked, impacting traffic and daily commuting across Noida and adjoining areas. The situation escalated in some pockets, leading to clashes with police.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the wage gap between Noida and neighboring industrial hubs in Haryana, where minimum wages have seen recent increases, was a significant factor fueling resentment among workers in Uttar Pradesh. Workers in Noida were reportedly earning considerably less than their counterparts in Gurgaon and Manesar for comparable work.

Government Response and Investigations

In response to the escalating situation, the Uttar Pradesh government has taken several measures. A high-level committee has been formed to resolve the dispute between workers and industries. This committee, headed by the Industrial Development Commissioner, has begun discussions with stakeholders to ensure peace and industrial harmony. The committee is tasked with investigating the reasons behind the unrest and violence and will submit recommendations on priority.

The Director General of Police (DGP) of Uttar Pradesh, Rajeev Krishna, stated that the police are actively identifying elements who allegedly instigated the violence. He warned that strict legal action would be taken against those found responsible once their identities are established. Earlier, Chief Minister Adityanath had flagged concerns about a possible larger conspiracy to revive disruptive elements and directed authorities to remain vigilant.

Wage Revisions and Official Statements

In a significant development, the Uttar Pradesh government has increased minimum wages across various worker categories. The revised rates, implemented retrospectively from April 1, aim to address some of the workers’ demands. Unskilled workers in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad will now earn approximately ₹13,690 per month, an increase from the previous ₹11,313. Semi-skilled workers will receive ₹15,059, and skilled workers will also see revised rates. The government acknowledged that the demands raised by workers were relevant and important, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach between industry and workers.

Speaking at an event marking the rollout of Tata Motors’ one-millionth bus in Lucknow, Chief Minister Adityanath reiterated the importance of workplace unity and a positive work culture. He stressed that gratitude and honesty are central to long-term success and urged workers to carry out their responsibilities with commitment. He highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s strength as a manufacturing hub, driven by its large, youthful workforce, and emphasized the state’s focus on connecting youth with skills, innovation, and technology to create an industry-ready workforce. He also pointed to the state’s rapidly expanding infrastructure, including expressways, as contributing to industrial growth.

District Magistrate’s Warning

The District Magistrate of Gautam Buddh Nagar, Medha Roopam, has also issued a warning to outsourcing agencies and contractors. They face strict action, including blacklisting and license cancellation, in case of any unruly behavior by them or their workers. This warning was issued during a meeting with outsourcing agencies and contractors of various industrial units, stressing the need for 100 percent compliance with government guidelines to maintain industrial peace in the district.
