SRINAGAR: A man died and four others sustained injuries when the truss of an under-construction cold storage unit collapsed amidst strong winds in Lassipora, Pulwama district, in South Kashmir on Thursday. The incident occurred as the structure gave way due to the adverse weather conditions.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the collapse led to immediate injuries for at least five individuals. Emergency services were mobilized, and all the injured were promptly transported to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, one of the critically injured individuals succumbed to their wounds.
The deceased has been identified as Sajad Ahmad Mir, a resident of Ruhama, Rafiabad. The injured have been identified as Jaspreet Singh from Amritsar, Aijaz Kumar and Hilal Ahmad Rather from Budgam, and Naseer Ahmad Mir from Baramulla. All individuals were associated with the under-construction facility.
Strong winds are believed to be the primary cause of the structural failure. Investigations into the incident are expected to focus on the integrity of the construction and adherence to safety protocols for such facilities. The area where the incident occurred is a developing industrial zone, with several cold storage units planned and under construction to support the region’s agricultural output, particularly its famed apple harvest.
The cold storage sector plays a crucial role in preserving perishable goods and extending their shelf life, thereby supporting farmers and the broader agricultural economy of Jammu and Kashmir. Incidents like this, however, highlight potential risks associated with construction in challenging weather conditions and underscore the importance of robust safety measures at all stages of development. Authorities are likely to review building codes and oversight procedures for industrial constructions to prevent future occurrences.
The incident has cast a shadow over the local community, prompting concern for worker safety in ongoing infrastructure projects. Officials have assured that all necessary support will be provided to the families of the victims, and a thorough inquiry will be conducted to ascertain the exact cause of the collapse and to ensure accountability.
